Perthshire and Royal Deeside
Multi-Day Tour
Day 1
Our tour crosses the Highland Line and enters a land of lochs and glens. We pass by Loch Earn and Loch Tay on our way to Killin from where a high single-track road takes us over to Glen Lyon. Here we can see what is believed to be the oldest living thing in Europe - a 3,000 year old yew tree and the alleged birthplace of Pontius Pilate at Fortingall.
A stroll in the Birks O'Aberfeldy, a delightful wooded glen which inspired Robert Burns to verse, can be enjoyed before arriving at our hotel for the night.
Day Two
We now head north by way of Pitlochry and Glenshee to Braemar in Deeside. The hills and wooded glens around the River Dee remain unspoilt (possibly because of the Royal connections) despite their obvious popularity. A short walk at the beautiful Linn of Dee, set in the heart of the Grampian Mountains, can be enjoyed before travelling on to Balmoral and Ballater.
Day Three
Today we enter the world of Speyside whiskies with famous names such as Balvenie, Glenlivet and Glenfiddich. Before turning south, visits to Cawdor Castle and the tragic battlefield of Culloden may be possible (depending on how many distilleries are visited!)
Your accommodation for the night will be in the Carrbridge/Aviemore area.
Day Four
In the morning we will visit Loch Morlich in Glen More Forest Park and enjoy a short walk around Loch an Eilean with its small island and castle.
Further south is Blair Castle, home of the Dukes of Atholl. We can visit the Pass of Killiekrankie, scene of the bloody battle in 1689 between the Jacobite adherents of James VII and government forces.
From Pitlochry we have a choice of routes, depending on your final destination of the day.
